Digital News Production: Live "OB" Idea

Deciding what story we should do for our live was a bit harder as we was going to do it on the Hop music festival being cancelled, but Helen said it wouldn't really work as nothing would be going on at the place as there is no longer a festival so we had to find another idea.

We did a lot of research into festivals in Kent and we finally came up with the Broadstairs food festival. The only thing wrong with this is that it is happening this weekend so this would only give us 3 days to plan before we film, now we are sure we can do it but we would need to talk to Helen and see if she thinks we can pull it off as she is the expert and we are still learning. This would be a good experience and we could learn from doing this is so short time as we would have to do it in industry.
We just need to make sure we have everything planned and ready so we can prove to Helen we are ready and can pull this off, as things like this don't happen very often and would be good experience.

Digital News Production: Folkestone Research

FOLKESTONE:

Folkestone is a sea side town on the coast of the English channel with a harbour, situated on the east coast of England.

Originally Folkestone did not have a harbour but because of storms and being hard to bring in boats they commissioned to build the harbour to increase the trade across the Channel.

Folkestone has many points of interest and places to see from the Battle of Britain Museum, the harbour, seaside and more. You can even see the white cliff of Dover as that is just down the coast line from Folkestone.

Folkestone is having it's Triennial at the moment which lasts from september to november 2nd, this happens every 3 years and helps with Folkestone's regeneration.

Most recently Folkestone has been going through a regeneration to modernise the town and make it more of a tourist detonation, the Triennial brings artists together to make Folkestone an art place but this year the Triennial had a mini Celebrity appear by the name of Banksy. Banksy is know for his street art which features all over the world, Banksy has only done a couple pieces in Kent before,  previously in Dungeness. This piece has been drawing in tourists and putting Folkestone back on the map.

The Triennial this year has some interesting pieces with Yoko Ono doing her bit on a advertisement board, saying earth peace. A young artist has been creative and placed a sculpture on the harbour floor which can only been scene when the tide goes out.

Fiction Adaptation: Ideas

I sat down and read the poems given to us and I think that I might do the one by Wilfred Owen - Anthem for a doomed youth (1917).

While reading the poem I had ideas which matched some words, I thought about using flickering candles like is says in the poem, I would use them to represent all the soldiers who fought for us.

Some of my ideas are:

  • Sunset over a field
  • Either V/O or words on screen
  • Calm ripples on a lake/sea
  • group of women chatting on a corner dressed from back in the war
  • night sky full of stars
  • camera as a POV of someone
  • Rain on flowers
  • Graveyard for remembrance
  • bell tower/church bell
  • shot of selection of war guns
  • tears streaming down cheeks
  • create emotion through sound/music
In the ideas lab I came up with 2 ideas with the help of Charlie, the first one is:

I was trying not to think of the war theme with soldiers, so I was trying to think of something like war where people fight then I came up with a jungle/safari where with animals its like a war group for food etc. this would be hard to film so would have to compromise so I was thinking about people dressed as animals and to be modern why not dressed in animal onesies. Charlie then said about a house party where "animals" was like a war ground drinking and fighting then passing out like dead bodies across the floor.
Shot glasses would be candles
Guns would be sounded with the bass of the music
Sound effects of a battleground going on
Girls walk home doing the "walk of shame" with smudged make up and last night clothes - representing the soldiers going home after war finishes
The sun rising over the world for a new day without war

Idea 2:

I was thinking about doing a remembering piece, where the camera was a POV of someone walking around his town and then flashing back to years ago when he was in war in these exact places.
Girls standing outside the theatre dressed like they did back then
We would also hear the sound of guns firing and the sound affects of war
I would have a older man saying the poem/ telling the story
Ending with the sun setting on the field where he fought our war.

I have not yet decided which idea i will go with but develop them both and see which one would be better.

Digital News Production: Ideas Lab

In the ideas lab on Friday 26th September our group came up with the idea of choosing the stories of 5000 more spaces needed in schools and the cliffs eroding in kent, but when we talked about this with  Helen and she told us we should have stories that match our genre so we should come up with that first.

We had a couple of thoughts for the title of our channel first as then the genre and stories would be narrowed down, some of our title thoughts:

Coastal Kent - this means we could do the cliffs eroding
Kent Arts - this would mean we do something of cuts in the arts
Kent Culture

Then Lex came up with Kent Entertainment making Kentertainment, this would be our title and so we will be doing stories involving music, theatre etc.

We then figured out what kind of intro we could do, for this we have 2 different ideas:

Lex said we should have the map of kent on screen and have words to do with entertainment move across the screen from left to right, then I said have the word Kent moving to the middle from the left and the word Entertainment moving to the middle from the right and they join to make Kentertainment in the middle.

Mike said we could make it more arty and use the idea of Pollock art and have the word Kentertainment on screen and paint drips start to fill the word, this i said should be made up of all our favourite colours, Red-Lex, Green- Mike, Yellow- me and Blue- Sophie.

We know we would like to film in the studio using a green screen, the green screen will then be replaced with a map of kent with words to do with entertainment going down fading (non moving)

We also had a thought for our production name and at the moment we are thinking of using our initials of our first names which spells SLAM.

Fiction Adaptation: Introduction

Fiction Adaption is pretty self explanatory, its where something that already exists is remade and adapted to be made modern or in a different way to tell the story in a slightly different way/view.

This unit is going to be based upon us being given a piece of fiction from a list and we would chose one that stands out to us, by this the ideas would start flowing and we would be able to create a short film.

The chose subject, chosen by Helen, is poets of the First World War. We was then given a list of 5 to chose from, these consist of:

Anthem for a Doomed Youth - by Wilfred Owen (1917)

The Death Bed - by Siegfried Sassoon (1916)

The Cenotaph - by Charlotte Mew (1919)

Recalling War - by Robert Graves (1938)

Summer in England,1914 - by Alice Meynnell (1914)

Each poem name has a link to a website with the poem on, plus each writer has a link to tell you a bit about them and there lives.

This project is individual, this means I chose what poem by myself and I have to find actors and camera people etc. to help me create this short film adapted from a poem. I will be the editor and director but should seek help from people in our class for camera, sound etc. or from people I advertise the job to.

This film will be between 3-5 minutes depending on the chosen poem and how I adapt it to how long it will be. I aim to fit as much into the film as possible to I would like to fill nearly the 5 minutes.

Each film has to have the words from the poem in, where spoken by the actor or voice over (v/o) or written on screen, I personally would like the words on screen depending on the story I choose.

Just because this is a war poem we do not need to follow the war theme or even have soldiers in, its my own idea and is meant to be the way I can imagine and see, adapted the way I want people to see the poem, in a different light.

We all need to have the same title as it is going to be part of a series, designed by the class.

We also need to write an essay of 2000-2500 words on a question of our choice, we have been given a choice of 3 questions and should pick one.
This needs to be Harvard referenced properly and handed in on the 12th december.

  1. Discuss the view that "with a successful adaptation, the original work is transformed into something new and different, although retaining many tares of what it was formerly" with reference to at least one text adapted for broadcast on television.
  2. To what extent is it true that "Adaptations of classic texts enable contemporary audiences to re-visit the past; as such that can be situated within the broader context of postmodern appropriations of history"? Examine with reference to at least one text adapted for broadcast on television.
  3. In adapting a novel the adaptor inevitably infringes the integrity of the original text - discuss with reference to at least one text adapted for broadcast on television.

Digital News Production: Ideas

Our group got together and discussed some ideas for the stories we want to cover.
Some of our ideas include:

Talking to experts in the field of our chosen stories are they won't be biased

Interviews with people involved/affected by the story - including the public or passers by

We are thinking of using a 2 camera set up of different angles so we can see the presenter and person but also a close up of just the person too

We had an idea of a 4 minute piece with the 2 minute studio presenter introducing the story and maybe talking to an expert then go to location to see whats happened etc, depending on the story

We also thought of having the 2 minute studio package as the presenter will talk about a few short stories happening then go to the on location presenter with our chosen story

We also had an idea of having someone doing the weather while the credits role on screen

We looked at some of the stories that are in the news in Maidstone at the moment and chose a couple that we think we could use:

  • Teen drink got spiked- this would target teenagers going to parties and drinking plus parents
  • Drunk women walks free after stabbing her husband - this targets women and men and makes aware the risks of drinking
  • Music festival will not return - this targets youths
  • Government needs to find 5000 more spaces for schools - this targets mothers trying to get there kids into schools nearby
We still need to chose the genre for our channel and this will help us decide on our stories.

Digital News Production: Introduction

Digital News Production is everything we hear about going on in the world summed up into a short news story often shown on TV at 6pm or 10pm, it can presented on the internet and in newspapers as well and is made to tell people what is happening in the world, TV normally shows the big stories like war and politics whereas the more local news which is normally online tells the local people what is happening in their area like festivals, kidnappings and coming ups.

Digital News Production is in groups of 3 or 4, my group is a 4 and made up of me, Sophie Marriott, Lex Wilkinson and Michael Hoad.

This unit is made up of 2 parts: the video projects and and essay/ case study.

The video project is the groups part but graded individually.
We have to design our own news channel on youtube using:

  •  title sequence designed by us
  • a promotional package with a presenter
  • a banner that is distinguished as our own channel
  • the 2 minute news report
The news package is to be made up of 2 -2.30 minutes including title sequence.

The "live" OB (outside broadcast) would use a presenter on location for up to 2 minutes and can have pre shot footage (archive).

The critical case study / essay will be made up of 1500 words and will compare 2 news programmes that was aired on the same day from either BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5 or Sky news.
The main objective will be to compare the similarities and differences including the following questions:

why was theses stories chosen on this day??
why was they presented in that way??
who they used and why these experts??
the way in which the show was presented using presenters in the studio the intro and package.
the impact these stories have on the public??

The deadline for this is the 8th of December and this includes both the essay and the video.
